Sustainable
agriculture
Agriculture
is the pillar for most African economies—supporting over 70% of the
population and contributing an average of 30% gross domestic
product (GDP). Increasing agricultural productivity is key to
Africa’s efforts to reduce widespread hunger, poverty, and diseases.
From now through 2003, USAID estimates that up to 35 million
people in Africa will need food aid. Our long-term strategy
is to increase agricultural productivity , food security, and contribute
to broad-based economic growth with equity. We seek to accomplish the
following objectives:
-
Increase
food production in a sustainable way and enhance food security and
food self-sufficiency.
-
Support
generation of high-cash value raw materials for agro-industries
and export earnings.
-
Ensure
stable supply of nutritionally balanced food for human and
livestock consumption.
-
Expand
access to agric
inputs (credits) and extension services
for resource-constraint farmers, especially for women.
-
Encourage
off-farm income diversification and agribusiness expansion.
-
Identify
and promote new techniques for reducing post-harvest crop losses.
-
Increase
access to agricultural
inputs and credits to small-holder farmers.
-
Upgrade
micro-financial institutions to provide loans and inputs to
benefit small-scale farmers.
-
Increase
capacity of private sector to supply, distribute, and market
agricultural inputs, particularly seeds and fertilizers.
-
Expand
access to agric
inputs (credits) and extension services increased for
resource-constraint farmers, especially for women.
