Progressive Initiatives in Development and Education Enterprises, Inc. (PRIDE International) was created in 1997 in Maryland, USA to advance philanthropy by accelerating positive human development and sustainable wealth creation. PRIDE’s creation evolved from fundamental paradigm shift in humanitarian assistance. Education—advancing the frontiers of knowledge---training of people for competitive marketable skills, provide the highest return of investments. PRIDE operates predominantly in developing countries where scarcity of resources and opportunities in education and training traps majority of the population in vicious poverty--hunger cycle and sustained foreign aid dependency. The mission is to improve the quality of life of the poor---restore human dignity by empowering people {maximize their abilities, express their creative talents} define their destiny for a livelihood that is of decent quality. PRIDE inspires people by uplifting them from poverty and dependency to self-sufficiency in meeting basic human needs and the need for income generation that ensures man’s harmonious coexistence with the environment. Innovations, accountability and cost-effectiveness are the embodiments of PRIDE—an organization that is constantly learning and adapting to cutting-edge technology/practical knowledge in providing simple and creative solutions to [humanity’s] most pressing problems. Five factors have given PRIDE solid reputation for success.
PRIDE works in poor countries at the grass roots level—providing humanitarian relief and technical assistance in agricultural and rural development, healthcare focusing in HIV/AIDS prevention, Alternative livelihood and rehabilitation of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, education and literacy training, environment and natural resource conservation, vocational training emphasizing targeting job creation and youth economic empowerment and rural infrastructure improvements. PRIDE works domestically promoting artistic and cultural exhibitions and diversity appreciation/inclusion. In area schools; PRIDE works with families and youths analyze and solve the most challenging problems in urban centers /inner city: The education and healthy lifestyle development of at-risk inner city youths. PRIDE works with the poorest people at the grass roots level encouraging broad-based participation-- tapping their creative talents, mobilizing local resources, energies and knowledge systems to support self-reliant common initiatives. PRIDE assist people and indigenous institutions identify needs, plan and analyze implementation designs and monitoring/evaluation systems. PRIDE seeks creative solutions to break barriers and create the deepest impact in people and their communities in the most cost-effective ways. PRIDE is an embodiment of success. By assisting 25 unemployed youths in vocational skill training (carpentry, gardening, computer/electronic maintenance, brick work; sewing and home-making skills), incomes have been generated and lives families have been touched. Within five years of operation, PRIDE has collected and shipped over 20,000 volumes of used books, 25 computers and supported two science and computer laboratories and libraries of two colleges. Students from participating schools have pursued computer and information technology careers. 1. In Ghana and Nigeria, PRIDE’s development programs focus on food and income security and agricultural development. Extension program focus on promoting best management practices for soybean/corn cultivation. 2. PRIDE is working in Nigeria and Cameroon ---the vision to expand access to information in rural communities---reducing the huge digital divide. Two school computer projects encourage the use of computers and information technology (integrating internet resources). 3. In Cameroon, PRIDE is helping strengthen common initiative efforts in sustainable natural resource conservation project that restores degraded forest, conserve water sheds, and soil fertility. Formulate and implement best management practices for agro-forestation and renewable forest-resource harvesting.
